Mammography

If you have any questions regarding your appointment or need other information, call: (307) 633-7800.

After your physician has scheduled your appointment for a mammogram, you will receive a phone call from us to update your records and insurance information.

Checking In

On the day of your appointment, as you enter Radiology, check in at the first desk where you will receive an outpatient slip.

Note: If your appointment is past 3:00 p.m., it will be necessary to check in at Admitting in the emergency entrance area before going to Radiology.

When you give the slip to the Radiology receptionist you will be directed to a waiting area where a registered mammographer will escort you to a dressing area.

You will be asked to undress from the waist up, wash off deodorant and put on a gown. Facilities are available for you to wash off deodorant, powder, lotion, etc., and we provide deodorant when you redress.

The mammogram is done in one of three private rooms.

Our GE Senographe DMR machines are FDA approved, and our registered mammographers have been tested and certified by the FDA, the American College of Radiology and they meet continuing education requirements to maintain their licensure.

To ensure more accurate results, the mammographer will ask questions about your medical history.

The mammogram is performed by compressing your breast tissue between plates on the machine. Depending on the tests your physician has ordered, the mammographer will x-ray one or both breasts in at least two angles.

That's it!

You will receive the results after 10 days by mail, as will your physician.

Handicap Access

CRMC's Women's Imaging Center also has handicap facilities with chairs available for those who need assistance.

Q: Why should I have a mammogram?
A: Most physicians follow the recommendations of the American Cancer Society when ordering a mammogram for their patients:

  • An initial baseline mammogram for women between the ages of 35 - 40, for comparison with future mammograms.
  • A mammogram once a year for women over 40.

These are recommendations and you should check with your physician to see what he/she thinks is best for you.

Your physician may also want you to have a mammogram if you have a history of breast cancer in your family, or if a lump is suspected during a physical examination.

Just because your physician wants you to have this test does not automatically mean that you have cancer.

Over 80% of all lumps prove to be noncancerous.

Early detection of cancer improves the chance for cure.

That is why annual mammography is so valuable.

Q: What can I expect from my mammogram?
A: When you arrive in our Mammography Imaging Unit, you will be given a private dressing room adjacent to the Mammography Room, and we will provide you with a gown to wear.

Because of the sensitivity of our mammography imaging equipment unit, we ask that your skin be free of deodorant, lotions or sprays and powders. Many deodorants show up on the mammogram decreasing the accuracy of your test.

Since you will be asked to undress from the waist up, you may wish to wear a blouse and skirt or slacks.

Please know we have designed our Mammography Suites specifically with your privacy and comfort in mind.

Q: What is a mammography exam like?
A: The exam itself consists of two x-rays of each breast in different positions. Occasionally more views are required.

We do have to use a compression device to flatten the breast tissue to obtain a sharper image, but this only causes a slight pressure for a few seconds. Both breasts are routinely examined for comparison.

Please plan on being in our Mammography Imaging Unit for about an hour.

Q: What happens once the mammogram is completed?
A: When your x-rays are complete, they will be studied by a Radiologist, a medical doctor with specialized training in x-ray interpretation.

Your physician will receive a written report, usually within 24 hours, and she can then discuss the findings with you. You will receive a written report from Cheyenne Regional Medical Center after 10 days.

The appointment time set aside for your exam will not only provide you and your physician with important medical information, but offers an opportunity for a learning experience for you.

Your mammography technologist is also specially trained in breast self-examination instruction, and can answer any questions you might have.

The technology which has developed mammography imaging units like those offered by Cheyenne Regional Medical Center has made early detection and treatment of breast cancer a reality, and your commitment to regularly scheduled mammograms is an important part of your health program.

For our part, the staff of Cheyenne Regional Medical Center promises you compassionate, private and personal care during your visit to our Mammography Imaging Department.

The Mammography Imaging Unit is a service of Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and provides its services without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, sex or handicap.
