Stereotactic Breast Biopsy by Carrie Ann Thoms, M.D.Q: Should I be worried if my mammogram is abnormal? A: Some of the most terrifying words a woman can hear are your mammogram was abnormal. Its important for women to know that 75 percent of the abnormalities discovered through mammograms are non-cancerous Stereotactic breast biopsy is a technique now available which takes tiny samples of breast tissue which can then be studied under a microscope. X-ray technology is used to target the exact tissue to be removed. Performed with local anesthetic, stereotactic breast biopsy has become a common, safe procedure. Results of the biopsy are usually available in one to two days. Not all lesions detected through mammograms are amenable to stereotactic breast biopsy. But for many women, this minimally-invasive technique can provide quick results and, hopefully, in most cases, peace of mind. Carrie Ann Thoms, M.D., is board certified in general surgery. Dr. Thoms is in private practice and is one of many physicians living and practicing medicine full-time in Cheyenne. |
