Gallstones by Carrie Ann Thoms, M.D.

Q: What are gallstones?

A: Gallstones are a common cause of abdominal pain.

Those at risk for gallstones are women who are in their forties, women who have been pregnant, anyone who is overweight and anyone who has a family history of gallstones.

Symptoms of a gallbladder problem may start after a meal, including a steady, severe pain in the upper abdomen that radiates to the back and is associated with bloating, nausea and/or vomiting.

Removal of the gallbladder, a cholecystectomy, in those with symptomatic gallstones can bring relief.

This is now often performed using video-surgery, making four or five small incisions. This minimally invasive surgery accounts for a faster recovery.

If you suffer abdominal pain, contact your physician. You could have a treatable condition, such as gallstones.

Carrie Ann Thoms, M.D., is board certified in general surgery.

Dr. Thoms is in private practice and is one of many physicians living and practicing medicine full-time in Cheyenne.
