Cardiac Rehabilitation by David G. Silver, M.D.Does cardiac rehabilitation really make a difference? It used to be that cardiac patients were told to slow down and take it easy. Today, most patients are given the opposite advice. Bypass surgery is not the only treatment for heart disease. Living a healthier, more active lifestyle can improve and prolong the patients life. Exercise is one of the keys to rebuilding health. United Medical Centers cardiac rehabilitation program begins while the patient is still in the hospital. This is followed by supervised exercises which strengthen the diseased heart and body. Walking is an important part of the program. Many patients are walking two to three miles a day within a few weeks of their bypass surgery. Heart patients who maintain a low-fat diet, avoid smoking and keep their weight down can slow the disease process. Reducing stress and taking time to relax are also important. David G. Silver, M.D., is board certified in general and thoracic surgery. Dr. Silver is in private practice and is one of many physicians living and practicing medicine full-time in Cheyenne. |
