:Q: What is laparoscopic surgery?

A: Laparoscopic surgery is a surgical procedure using a special operative scope called a laparoscope.

This telescope-like camera is inserted through tiny incisions and used to view the surgical area. Surgical instruments are inserted through other tiny incisions, and the surgery is performed without a large incision.

Surgical procedures routinely done using a laparoscope include hiatal hernia (for gastroesophageal reflux disease), inguinal hernia, gallbladder, appendectomy, colorectal surgery, and splenectomy.

Smaller incisions usually result in less pain for a shorter period of time and an overall shorter recuperative period. Your surgeon will review your particular medical history to determine if laparoscopic or more traditional larger incision surgery is appropriate for your particular situation.
