W. Joseph Horam, MD- Safety RestraintsQ: Do seat belts really save lives? A: Proper utilization of motor-vehicle restraints is an important matter. Child passenger safety experts frequently find that 80 to 90 percent of car seats are improperly used by caregivers. Infants from birth to one year of age and a child less than 20 pounds should be in a rear-facing car seat. Children 20 to 40 pounds may face forward in a convertible car seat with a proper-fitting harness system. Children 40 to 80 pounds do best with a booster seat that secures with a harness or uses the vehicles lap and shoulder belt. Individuals over 80 pounds should be sufficiently safe with the vehicles lap and shoulder belt positioned low about the pelvis. All children aged 12 years and under should ride in the back seat. Individuals who ride in front and risk exposure to air bags should be at least five feet tall and weigh 100 pounds. W.
