Larry Hattel, MD - AngioplastyQ: What is angioplasty? A: Foods rich in saturated fats and cholesterol have been linked to coronary heart disease, or atherosclerosis. In treating severe cases of atherosclerosis, a cardiac procedure called angioplasty may be recommended. In this procedure, the cardiologist guides a catheter to the blocked coronary artery. A second catheter with a balloon tip is then passed through the blockage. The balloon is inflated to push the plaque against the artery wall, widening the channel of the artery to restore proper blood flow. The patient is usually out of the hospital in one to two days. For many patients, angioplasty offers an effective treatment for atherosclerosis, and improved quality of life. Larry J. Hattel, MD, is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology. Dr. Hattel is in private practice and is one of many physicians living and practicing medicine full-time in Cheyenne. |
