William Harrison, MD - Colds vs. Flu

Q: Do I have the flu or is it just a cold?

A: Few people are aware of the difference between the flu and the common cold.

Often, the elderly and others with chronic health conditions will delay going to the doctor until they are having a true health emergency hospitalization.

A simple rule of thumb to follow is if you have:
¨ stuffy nose,
¨ sore throat,
¨ cough,
¨ headache and,
no other symptoms, you are probably suffering from the common cold.

Bed rest, plenty of liquids and chicken soup should take care of your cold within two or three days, and you should be back on your feet.

If your symptoms progress to:
¨ temperature of more than 101,
¨ green, yellow or brown phlegm,
¨ painfully sore throat that makes swallowing difficult,
¨ body aches and chills,
¨ vomiting,
¨ diarrhea,
¨ difficult or labored breathing,
you should call your physician.

William A. Harrison, MD, is board certified in internal medicine, and infectious disease.

Dr. Harrison is in private practice and is one of many physicians living and practicing medicine full-time in Cheyenne.
