Jeff Carlton, MD - Prostate Cancer

Q: How serious is the risk of prostate cancer?

A: This year, prostate cancer will affect more than two hundred thousand American men.

One in every 10 men will develop prostate cancer by the time they reach age 85, but prostate cancer is not life-threatening if it is detected early.

The two primary screening tests for prostate trouble are the digital rectal exam, and a blood test for prostate-specific antigen, known as the “PSA Test”. In the blood, an
elevated PSA level indicates a problem with the prostate, such as cancer or other conditions.

The American Cancer Society recommends a digital rectal exam for every man over 40. In addition, men age 50 and over, should have an annual PSA test.

If you suspect you may be at risk for prostate cancer, contact your physician immediately.

Jeffrey C. Carlton, MD, is board certified in radiology.

Dr. Carlton is in private practice, and is one of many physicians living and practicing medicine full-time in Cheyenne.
