Q: Is a physician breast exam really necessary?
A: Yes.
More than 180,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, and one in eight women will develop breast cancer by age 85.
The three keys to beating
breast cancer are breast self-exam, regularly scheduled mammograms and
regular physician examination. While more and more women
understand the importance of breast self-exam, it is not a substitute
for periodic
examinations by a qualified physician.
Most physicians recommend
women have a clinical breast exam as part of their annual checkup beginning
at age 40. Mammograms should begin with an initial mammogram at age
35 to 40, followed by mammograms once every year for women age 40 and
older.
Breast self-exam, regular clinical breast exams and following the American
Cancer Society’s recommendations on mammograms offer every woman
the best chance for beating breast cancer.
