Operating Room
The OR has 10 surgical suites and is full-service with specialties that include general, heart, neurology, orthopedic, genitourinary, gynecology, maxillofacial, plastic, ear/nose/throat, ophthalmology, and dental.

The facility’s staff is comprised of RNs, certified surgical technicians, anesthesia technicians, surgical support aides, perfusionists, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA), secretaries, and a waiting-room nurse and performs 550-600 surgical procedures a month.

Two emergency call teams, one for general surgery and one for heart and back up, as well as an open-heart perfusionist, are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The call teams also are certified in trauma care and assist when needed with trauma patients in the Emergency Room.

“CRMC’s Operating Room equipment is so state-of-the-art that people who come from large medical centers and metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles are amazed at its tremendously high quality,” the director of Surgical Services, said. “Our CRMC Administration has seen that we have the best in order to give outstanding patient care. It has also helped in recruiting high-caliber employees and physicians to the area.”

Anesthesia
Anesthesia staff is made up of CRNAs, or certified registered nurse anesthetists, who have advanced-practice degrees in anesthesia, and anesthesia technicians who assist them and the anesthesiology staff, which is made up of physicians.

Surgical Scheduling
The Surgical Scheduling area’s staff is made up of LPNs who are also trained in computer skills and all scheduling is performed on-line. They schedule for surgery, OB, Care Clinic and Pain Clinic as well as for cardioversions.

Sterile Processing
The staff decontaminates, reprocesses/reassembles and sterilizes equipment and supplies for many areas besides the surgical departments, such as Emergency Room, Obstetrics and Home Health—anywhere sterile equipment and supplies are needed. Many of the instrument technicians are certified in Sterile Processing.

Same Day Surgery
Same Day Surgery (SDS) staffs RNs, CNAs, and secretaries who care for patients who are admitted and discharged for day surgery or other procedures too acute for a doctor’s office, yet not needing an overnight hospital stay.

She said, “It’s very fast-paced and the staff is high-energy, caring for 30 to 40 patients a day. SDS has 16 beds, which accounts for a rapid turnover.”

PACU/Pain Clinic
The Post Anesthesia Care Unit/Pain Clinic has an all RN staff with special, required certifications, and many nurses have a background in critical care nursing.

‘PACU is a high-stress area, and our nurses are experts in airway management and drug interactions, especially anesthesia drugs,” she said.

CRMC’s Pain Clinic sees patients on Wednesdays when staff members assist physicians with analgesic procedures for patients.

Surgical Services also offers a six-month Operating Room training program for registered nurses wishing to specialize in operating room nursing. Nurses come from across the nation to learn the skills required, then commit to stay at CRMC for two years.
