CHEYENNE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER’S BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES TO SPONSOR DEPRESSION SCREENING

CHEYENNE – Cheyenne Regional Medical Center's Behavioral Health Services, located at CRMC East Building, 2600 E. 18th St., second floor, will be the local screening site for the annual “National Depression Screening Day” scheduled for Thursday, October 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This annual event is an opportunity for community members who think they may be suffering from depression to get free, confidential screening and referral for follow-up treatment, if necessary.

Persons wishing to attend the screening are encouraged to drop-in anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Participants are asked to complete a brief questionnaire and then will be able to talk with a staff member.

Marta Pieczalska, M.D., board certified psychiatrist, will be giving a one-hour presentation at noon and again at 3 p.m. Depression is a common illness, affecting an estimated 15 million Americans each year. In spite of this, it frequently goes undiagnosed and untreated. Only one in three depressed persons seek treatment.

Failing to recognize depression can have serious consequences, including emotional and social withdrawal, lost work time, poorer outcomes from physical illnesses such as heart disease and cancer, and an increased risk of suicide or other self-destructive behaviors. Yet depression is highly treatable; an estimated 80 to 90 percent of those diagnosed can be helped.

Common signs of depression include overwhelming feelings of sadness and/or despair, sleep problems, lack of energy or tiring easily, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, having trouble concentrating or making simple decisions, recurrent thoughts of death, planning suicide or attempting suicide.

If you recognize any of these signs of depression in yourself or someone you love, we encourage you to take advantage of the free screening on October 5. Questions regarding this screening may be directed to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Services at 633-7370.
