Cheyenne Regional becomes one of the first in state to improve patient outcomes with Rapid Response Team

CHEYENNE – Cheyenne Regional Medical Center became one of the first hospitals in the state of Wyoming to implement a Rapid Response Team. Since the implementation of the Rapid Response Team in January, 2006, Cheyenne Regional has seen a 15 percent decrease in medical “code” situations outside the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department. A code occurs when a patient has an absence of respiration and/or pulse.

“Intervention by the Rapid Response Team before the patient’s status declines to the point of a code situation improves outcomes for the patient,” said Arleen Roder-Campeau, Administrative Director of Critical Care at Cheyenne Regional. “Early response and intervention are keys to promoting positive patient outcomes.”

Cheyenne Regional’s Rapid Response Team is made up of clinically experienced staff, including five ICU registered nurses (RN), and respiratory therapists. The duty of each team member is to consult with nursing staff and mentor in instances of concern or crisis.

The Rapid Response Team is on-site 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Once called, this member will immediately respond to the patient’s bedside, collaborating with primary care nurses and physicians to facilitate the best possible outcome for the patient.

“Our Rapid Response Team has been instrumental in helping our hospital provide the premier healthcare our patients deserve,” said Kathy Green, Vice President of Nursing “Our goal is to reduce our codes by getting help for these patients early, or by getting them transferred to a higher level of care, such as the intensive care unit.”

Cheyenne Regional’s Rapid Response Team was created as a result of the hospital’s participation in the 100K Lives campaign. The Massachusetts-based Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) advocated a campaign for hospitals titled, “100K Lives.” The 100K Lives Campaign is an initiative to engage hospitals in the United States to implement changes in care proven to improve patient care and prevent avoidable deaths.

Cheyenne Regional is a 218-bed premier regional healthcare system that prides itself on delivering the highest standard of quality care to meet the region’s growing healthcare needs. Our highly trained physicians and employees, evidence-based initiatives and advanced technologies ensure our patients will receive exceptional care close to home.
