Cheyenne Regional uses March of Dimes grant to address smoking during pregnancy

CHEYENNE – Cheyenne Regional Medical Center will use a $4,640 grant from the March of Dimes to improve birth outcomes and reduce infant morbidity and mortality for pregnant and parenting families in Laramie County through promotion of tobacco-free lifestyles. Currently, Laramie County does not have a community-wide prevention program targeting pregnant women who use tobacco, are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke or whose children are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke.

The program is designed to help Laramie County women quit tobacco use before and/or during pregnancy and maintain cessation after the baby is born. The program represents a comprehensive partnership with prenatal and pediatric care providers, along with Cheyenne Regional’s Women and Children’s Services and other departments.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, maternal smoking during pregnancy is the single most preventable cause of illness and death among infants. In fact, in Wyoming, smoking can be attributed as a causal factor in approximately:

    • 15% if infant deaths related to short gestation/low birth weight
    • 22% related to sudden infant death syndrome
    • 6% related to respiratory distress
    • 8% related to other perinatal respiratory conditions
Tobacco use is prevalent in Laramie County with 25.6 percent of county residents reporting smoking and 28.4 percent of households in the county have no rule prohibiting smoking in the home, according to the Wyoming Department of Health. Of pregnant women, 16 percent of county residents report smoking, compared to 21 percent statewide.

Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. To achieve its mission, the March of Dimes funds research, community services, education and advocacy.
