Mother Baby CareBecause the first few days after giving birth can be an emotional roller coaster for a new parent, CRMC's Maternal Child Services (MCS) has implemented a service called "Mother-Baby Care." The program is designed to help mothers and family members bond with the new baby by having a designated nurse care for the mother and baby during their hospital stay. This nurse is dedicated to the mother's recovery and helping to make the time in the hospital one of a bonding experience for mother and baby. Nurses teach mothers about newborn responses and sleep-wake cycles, as well as helping establish flexible feeding and sleeping patterns according to the needs of both mother and baby. One of the many advantages of this Mother-Baby Care is it promotes successful breastfeeding by keeping mother and infant together while developing confidence in the mother's new role. Mothers also get to know their baby's needs in a supportive atmosphere. This care provides opportunities for family members to be involved and bond with the new baby, and family members have the occasion to ask questions and learn about choices and decisions before the new baby comes home. If infants require specialized care from CRMC's Level II Nursery, the specially trained nurses and the designated nurse work together with mothers to provide the special care these infants need. Women who are recovering from a Cesarean birth or other birth complications are assured that if they are unable to care for the newborn personally, they still have the opportunity to have their babies in the room with them. The designated mother-baby nurse will care for both so the mother may be close to her child. Although the service as well as literature encourages mothers be with babies to learn their habits, any mother may choose to have her baby taken to the Nursery for intervals during any time of the day or night. "Not only do I believe in the philosophy of Mother-Baby Care, but as a staff nurse who actually learned to give the care, I quickly saw its benefits," said the MCS nurse manager. "When babies stay with their mothers, mothers learn babies' habits and routines, which makes the transition home much easier. And, one nurse cares for both the mother and the infant, so continuity of care is increased. With Mother-Baby Care, the benefits are many, and I am proud that at CRMC we deliver the best care to both our mothers and babies." |
