Infant Security

In order to ensure your infant's security, it is important to follow our security procedures.

Below are some frequently asked questions:

1. How do I know I have the right baby?

  • After your delivery, your nurse will put a bracelet on you, and the baby's father.
  • The baby will have two bracelets; the number on all four bracelet is the same and is used to verify that you have the right baby.
  • Always check and verify the numbers on both your bracelet and the baby's bracelet with the nurse when you receive the baby from the staff and when you give the baby to the staff.

2. Who can I safely give my baby to?

Staff and students must adhere to all of the following when working at the Cheyenne Birthplace:

  • wear scrubs unique to the Maternal Child Services Unit
  • wear a picture ID, which is visible at ALL times
  • wear an additional button that ONLY Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby and Pediatric staff wear.

Note: physicians, residents and other providers do not wear these special scrubs or badges. You should know who your physician(s) is. If you have questions, please ask.

3. What is mother-baby care?Card Exchange

Childbirth is a normal, natural event, but at the same time, mothers and their babies are very different from the other patients in a hospital.

The relationship between a mother and a new baby after the birthing experience is a unique to patient care. To respect the importance of this relationship, CRMC provides mother-baby, or "couplet" care.

Within this concept, one nurse cares for both the mother and the baby together as a couplet. Bonding between mother and baby occurs much earlier, and families are involved and participate in decisions regarding the mother and baby's care.

Breast feeding can occur sooner and is promoted for the health and safety of the baby.

The overall goal of mother-baby care is to live the values of CRMC -- to provide quality patient care and to offer outstanding patient satisfaction.

4. What else can I do to protect my baby?

  • HALO System - locks door and elevators, sets off alarm.
  • Never leave your baby out of your direct eyesight.
  • Know the staff assigned to you and your infant and insist they adhere to security measures.
  • Always question people who are taking your baby.
  • Never let your baby go with anyone if you are uncomfortable with their identity.
  • During your stay in the hospital, infants must be transported in bassinets any time they are outside of your room. Infants should never be carried during their stay.
  • Do not give out any information about yourself or your baby over the telephone or to anyone in person unless you absolutely know him or her.
  • Ask visitors to abide by visiting hours.
  • Do not take your infant to the Family Lounge.
  • Exits are locked and video surveillance cameras are used to monitor hallways, exits and ward activity.
