Hospice

Hospice affirms quality of life with dignity; neither hastens nor postpones death, but encourages patients and families to achieve the degree of preparation for death in the final phase of a terminal illness.Hospice is based on the premise that through patient and family participation in care, most needs can be met in a home like setting with hospice support and an emphasis on comfort care.By means of an interdisciplinary team, Hospice provides psychological, physical, emotional, social and spiritual support to patients and families without discrimination during the final stage of life and during bereavement.

Davis Hospice Center is located at: 6000 Sycamore Road, Cheyenne, WY 82009

Care is provided by:

  • patient’s physician, who oversees the patient's plan of care,
  • registered nurses who specialize in pain and symptom management, who provide care specific to the needs of patients,
  • certified nurse's assistants who assist the patient with personal care and light household duties, who provide the patient and family with support and guidance in coping with the stresses which may occur in dealing with a terminal illness; and who may also assist in determining appropriate resources available,
  • spiritual resource team members who provide spiritual assessment, care and support in keeping with the patent/family desires and belief system,
  • pharmacist who oversee the patient's medications,
  • trained volunteers who are available to provide respite for caregivers,
  • registered dietitians are available for nutrition consultations,
  • physical, occupational and speech therapist are available for consultation,
  • bereavement counselor who provides grief counseling, support groups and information for family members following the death.

A person is eligible for Hospice care if he/she:

  • has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
  • is receiving medical care by a local physician who is willing to work with Hospice.
  • is residing in Laramie County.
  • has a 24-hour caregiver in the home, or has developed a plan for primary caregivers services.

Payment: Hospice is a benefit of Medicare/Medicaid and many private insurances.

Hospice provides:

  • Care of the patient and family as a unit.
  • Comprehensive range of health services, focusing on comfort care.
  • Access to Hospice team 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Physician-directed interdisciplinary care.
  • Quality of life maintained at the fullest possible level
  • Bereavement care that follow primary caregivers and families..

Hospice offers the following groups facilitated by qualified Hospice professionals:

  • Adult Bereavement Support
  • Adolescent Bereavement Support - as announced
  • Children's Bereavement Support - as announced

Hospice provides professional counselors who specialize in the area of grief and loss. They are available to assist with:

  • Grief assessment for adults, children, and teens
  • Individual counseling
  • Support groups
  • Bereavement camps
  • Crisis/disaster response
  • Consultation
  • Educational presentations
  • Referrals

Volunteer Services:

Volunteers are a valuable example of the support Hospice provides. Trained volunteers contribute to patient/family care by:

  • forming close bonds with patients and families
  • providing emotional support
  • providing respite care
  • offering support to bereaved family members
  • performing light household duties
  • providing transportation to patients and family members
  • maintaining confidentiality
